David H. Gutmann, MD, PhD, the Donald O. Schnuck Family Professor of Neurology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, has been elected to the Association of American Physicians.
Election is an honor extended to physicians who have made outstanding contributions to basic or translational biomedical research and who represent the highest caliber of physician‐led science accomplishments and scientific leadership.
Gutmann was recognized for his work on the neurofibromatosis (NF) cancer predisposition syndromes, a set of complex genetic disorders that cause tumors to grow on nerves in the brain and throughout the body. Much of his work has focused on elucidating the contributions of immune cells to tumor formation and growth, and determining how brain tumors cause vision loss. Recently, he has begun exploring the role neurons themselves play in driving the formation and progression of nervous system tumors, making him one of the pioneers in the emerging field of cancer neuroscience.
