Three scientists honored: their research is paving a new cancer therapy the way

Two American and a British scientist to be awarded the Nobel prize in medicine. William Kaelin, Gregg Semenza and Peter Ratcliffe had figured out how cells react to air with varying oxygen content. The Nobel Committee of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, said that the results of the research allowed for new methods of treatment of cancer or anemia. The way how the cells measure the oxygen content, would be in the case of many diseases at the center. The prize is awarded since 1901. Kaelin, Semenza and Ratcliffe will receive prize money of about 900.000 Euro. The Nobel prize in Medicine was endowed as the other Nobel prizes by the Swedish Industrialist Alfred Nobel. The prize money will be paid out of the interest rates of its assets.
